USCIS Reviderer Blanket I-9

[:en]The following should be of interest to all our clients with employees in the United States:

USCIS has revised Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Employers may continue using Form I-9 with a revision date of 03/08/2013 N. through Jan. 21, 2017.  By Jan. 22, 2017, employers must use the revised form.

These are some of the changes in the new version:

• Employees only need to provide other last names used in Section 1, rather than all names used.
• The certification in Section 1 for certain foreign nationals takes less time to complete.
• There are additional spaces to enter multiple preparers and translators.
• There is a dedicated area to enter additional information that employers have been required to notate in the margins of the form.

Furthermore, it is now easier than ever to complete Form I-9 on a computer as the revised form includes many upgrades over the old format.

USCIS Offentliggør Nye Gebyrer på Ansøgninger til Visa og Green Cards

Martensen Wright has learned that the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will be increasing the filing fees for a number of applications and petitions effective December 23, 2016. Fees paid by the applicants and petitioners fund the USCIS work and fees will be increased by an average of 21 percent.

This may affect some of our immigration clients, especially those that are in the process of preparing applications or might be considering it.

The chart lists USCIS’ fees effective December 23, 2016. Applications and petitions postmarked or filed on or after that date must include these new fees in order for USCIS to process them.[:da]

Martensen Wright gør opmærksom på, at United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) forhøjer ansøgningsgebyrer for en række ansøgninger og begæringer.  De nye gebyrer træder i kraft den 23. december 2016.  Ansøgningsgebyrerne finansierer USCIS’s arbejde og stigningerne ligger i gennemsnit på 21 procent.

Disse stigninger kan komme til at berøre nogle af vores immigrationsklienter, som enten er i gang med at søge om visum eller er ved at overveje muligheden om at søge.

Martensen Wright til middag med Anders Fogh Rasmussen i San Francisco

[:en]Martensen Wright PC, a Premium Sponsor of the Danish American Chamber of Commerce of Northern California was proud to be a part of the presentation by, and welcome dinner for, the former Prime Minister of Denmark and former NATO Secretary General, Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Mr. Rasmussen was promoting his new book, “The Will to Lead”.

The evening at Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco started with a fireside chat, where Mr. Fogh Rasmussen presented his views on American leadership in the global struggle for freedom and democracy, and concluded with dinner. We enjoyed input on the world situation today by this seasoned politician. Anders Fogh Rasmussen also shared anecdotes from his interesting life as the highest political representative of Denmark and later NATO. Dorthe Mikkelsen Wright, Honorary Consul of Denmark, and Edward Wright were in attendance, along with several of the firm’s clients.

Lars Reed udvalgt til dommerfuldmægtig for Præsidenten ved Højesteretten i Alaska

[:en]We extend our congratulations to Lars Reed, our Law Clerk, who was recently selected for a one-year clerkship with Chief Justice Craig Stowers of the Supreme Court of Alaska. Lars will start his clerkship in August 2017, following his graduation from the UC Davis School of Law.
Lars joined Martensen Wright PC in January 2016 as a part time clerk during his legal studies. Since then, he has eagerly and competently assisted our attorneys in all our practice areas. We are proud and happy to have Lars as part of the Martensen Wright team, and wish him the best of luck wherever his career takes him.

DIVERSITY IMMIGRANT VISA LOTTERY 2018

[:en]The Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery for 2018, also known as the Green Card Lottery, is back. It is an annual program that allows 50,000 persons from countries with low rates of immigration to apply for Permanent Resident Status in the United States. The application must be filed online between Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 12:00 noon, Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), and Monday, November 7, 2016 at 12:00 noon, Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). You can access the online application through the following link: https://www.dvlottery.state.gov/ .

Startup Visum – International Entrepreneur (Iværksætter) Regel

[:en]The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, USDHS, has proposed a new rule regarding international entrepreneurs. If finalized, the rule would allow USDHS to grant parole status (temporary permission to be in the U.S.) to foreign start-up entrepreneurs, who will be able to enter and work in the USA. The proposal was recently published in the Federal Register for public comment and the new regulations are expected to become effective late 2016 or early 2017. The White House proposed the “start-up visa” to recognize the impact of foreign entrepreneurs on the U.S. economy and the suggested parole is meant to enhance entrepreneurship and encourage start-ups.

The targeted group for parole is entrepreneurs of start-up entities that would provide a significant public benefit to the U.S. by demonstrating substantial potential for rapid increase in revenue and rapid job creation.
